Blackboard Test Question Types, Explained

Blackboard Learn powers courses at thousands of universities. Its tests support a wide spread of question formats — here is what each one is and how to study it.

What is Blackboard?

Blackboard Learn, now owned by Anthology, is a learning management system used widely across higher education. Instructors build Tests, Quizzes and Surveys from a question pool, deploy them to a course with optional time limits and randomisation, and can offer self-assessments that do not count toward a grade. Blackboard supports one of the broadest sets of question types of any LMS, including a few unusual ones — so recognising each format on sight saves real time when a graded test is timed.

Question types you'll see on Blackboard

  • Multiple Choice — One correct option from several.
  • Multiple Response — "Multiple Answer" — select every correct option; partial credit is typical.
  • True/False — A fast two-option check.
  • Fill in the Blank — "Fill in the Blank" and "Fill in Multiple Blanks" match typed text to accepted answers.
  • Matching — Pair items across two columns.
  • Ordering — Put items into the correct sequence.
  • Hotspot — "Hot Spot" — click the correct area of an image.
  • Numeric — "Calculated Numeric" accepts a value within an allowed range.
  • Jumbled Sentence — "Jumbled Sentence" rebuilds a sentence by choosing each word from a dropdown.
  • Short Answer — "Short Answer" collects a few sentences (manually graded).

New to any of these? The question-type glossary explains how each format works, with examples.

How to study for it

Use Blackboard self-tests and practice deployments to meet each format before it is timed. Blackboard's less common items — Hot Spot, Jumbled Sentence, Ordering and Calculated questions — are the ones students freeze on, so rehearse those specifically. For Fill in Multiple Blanks, remember each blank is scored separately; for Calculated questions the numbers can change per attempt, so practise the method rather than a single result.

Study for Blackboard with AI Solve Quiz

AI Solve Quiz helps you decode Blackboard practice questions: select text for a step-by-step explanation, or capture a Hot Spot image, chart or diagram for our Gemini vision reader. It is tuned to the auto-graded formats above and leaves the Short Answer and essay items — the ones you are meant to write yourself — alone.
