Cloze (Gap-Fill) Questions

A cloze question is a single passage containing multiple embedded gaps. Each gap can be a dropdown, a short typed answer, or a number, so one cloze item bundles several sub-questions.

How to approach it

Read the whole passage first for context, then solve each gap using the words around it. Grammar and collocation (which words naturally go together) are your best clues.

Example

In a paragraph about photosynthesis, the gaps might ask for "chlorophyll", "carbon dioxide", and "glucose" in sequence.

Common variants

  • Embedded multiple choice gaps
  • Embedded short-answer gaps
  • Embedded numeric gaps

How AI Solve Quiz helps with cloze questions

AI Solve Quiz reads the passage as a whole and explains each gap in context, showing how the surrounding sentence determines the missing word.

Frequently asked questions

How is a cloze question different from fill-in-the-blank?
A fill-in-the-blank item is usually one sentence with one or two blanks. A cloze is a longer passage with several embedded gaps that may mix dropdowns, typing, and numbers.
